Writing as a Tool for Learning

πŸ”₯Thought#note/thought

Writing is a tool for learning, not just a demonstration of what you've already learned. When taking notes, it's more effective to summarize the content than to try to write it down verbatim. Summarization both tests your understanding of the content and re-enforced the learning, We learn best by contrast and comparison.

The Zettelkasten Slip-box approach to note taking creates an environment which works with our brain rather than against it, we're able to write WHILE comparing and contrasting in a way that mirrors our brain. I use Obsidian as a Tool for Learning to help me with this.

In Paul Graham's post on reading he says reading teaches us to write and writing is the best way to discover new ideas and generate understanding. I appreciate this, even if I haven't always agreed with everything Paul Graham has written (e.g. How Silicon Valley twisted Paul Gram's Founder Mode).
