Step one in learning is to notice and name

At every point in our development, from infancy to the height of our expertise, the first step in learning something new is to notice it and name it. Language is the essential building block of our unique human ability to construct meaning and understanding of our environment. At the most fundamental level, Concepts and categories are essential to the human experience, and we use words to describe and differentiate these things.

In a very simple example, I taught my son to recognize the difference between frustration and anger. Before being able to notice and name these two categories of emotion he viewed all frustration as anger, by developing a more granular understanding of his emotions he was able to recognize when he was feeling frustrated and understand that it didn't need to be directed at others.

As a more complex example, to recognize different forms of political and economic systems you need to be able to notice and name concepts such as: Democracy, Monarchy, Oligarchy, Republic, Authoritarianism, Totalitarianism, Capitalism, Socialism, Communism, Despotism, Demagogy, etc. Since your System 1 is a Coherence Machine if you only have categories for Democracy and Communism then you will try to force everything you see into these two categories.
